LPS hosts School Finance Symposium
(April 2009)

The evening of Thursday, April 2, 2009, the LPS Board of Education and the district Financial Advisory Committee hosted a School Finance Symposium.  The purpose of the symposium was to offer an opportunity for parent leaders to learn more about the way in which school finance works and how various state policies affect school funding. It was also a way to begin conversations about school finance throughout the LPS community.  The meeting was open to the public.  About 70 people were in attendance.

Scott Myers, LPS chief financial officer, opened the meeting with a brief explanation of how LPS receives its funding from the state.  Guest speakers Carol Hedges, senior policy analyst from the Colorado Fiscal Policy Institute, and Tracie Rainey, executive director of the Colorado School Finance Project, presented information and explained how the Gallagher Amendment, Arveschoug-Bird, TABOR, Amendment 23, and Referendum C affect how K-12 education is funded.
