Mid-year rescission of $532,000 hit LPS in the spring of 2009
(spring 2009)
In an effort to make up for a significant state budget deficit, the State of Colorado reduced funding to K-12 education in two different ways in the spring of 2009:
- a mid-year rescission (a one-time cut in the current 2008-2009 budget year); and
- reduced funding per pupil for budget year 2009-2010.
Due to the mid-year rescission, LPS received about $532,000 less in state funding for the remainder of the 2008-2009 school year. This reduction equaled about $35.89 per pupil in LPS.
The following approach was taken that ensured that at least two-thirds of the rescission came from the LPS Education Services Center (central office) and that the remaining one third came from the schools:
- $25.89 per pupil was cut at the ESC through further budget reductions, for a total of $360,000.
- Each school’s supply budget, including those of special and alternative programs, was reduced by $10 per pupil, for a total of $139,050. The total of ESC and school reductions then equaled $35.89 per pupil.
- Charter schools were reduced by the same $35.89 per pupil, for a total of $32,965.
This approach demonstrated our continuing commitment to keep budgetary impacts away from the classroom as much as possible. However, there is no question that everyone felt these cuts.
