To Blog or Not to Blog, that is the question...
Location: BlogsMonday Models Discussions

Is a blog a piece of your classroom experience?   Could it be?  If so, in what situations can you see using a blog in your teaching?  What are the permissions you would set, and why?  And finally, how can the ITS team support you in your use of this or other 21st century technologies?  I welcome you to share your ideas with other teachers in our district.

I hope to use this as a quasi critique of student or professoinal work, downside is the lack of computer labs in my building...i just need a dozen in my room...

I probably will, but I need to digest it and think about how I want to use it. I will start small, get my feet wet, and see how it goes. There are tons of possibilities to use this.

I have access to computerrs in my class. I have a blog with blogspot that I have used. I'll pobably try this, as the students don't need email accounts.

Mike,
I think all of the Monday Models have been great teaching tools.
Students are very tech savvy, so they will be looking for teacher blogs and I can see this happening even at the elementary level.

I can see this being very useful to our tech. proficient students! What a great way to get a converstion going and at the highschool level this is a prep for online college classes!

As a kindy teacher I don't see it working easily for my classroom. I feel very vulnerable putting this up for comments. We willl have to see how my first year plays out and maybe next year.

Blogging is a great way of learning! This is my first year using it in my freshman english class, and it definitely helps in finding out about others' opinions. Unlike normal socratic seminars where people cut each other off in order to get their say in, blogging is a live discussion that is a lot more courteous and polite.

Blogging has become huge in my classes now but in the end, I really don’t like it. Yes, it's true in real discussions; it's hard to get a word in. But blogging takes away the human contact. Let's be honest, how many people actually read all the comments posted before posting their own? You may blog, but you have no idea if anyone is going to see your thoughts, or even remotely care. I just feel putting things on blog, isnt going to get your thoughts known. You have the choice to read this blog, but if i really want to tell you something, ill tell you to make you listen.

I think blogging has been very benefitial in my English Class. I had never used a blog prior to this year, but it has been very helpful to me. When we were reading Macbeth, i found Shakespeare's writing ver difficult to understand. However, we used the blog to talk about the book at home and I was able to get a better understanding of it. I think the Blog is a great way for us to review material and help one another learn.

Great question, Mike. And I really enjoyed the thoughtful comments. To me, blog is the common-person's publication that can be broadcast to the world. It can extend and enhance human relationships. we must be clear that we don't suggest that people blog instead of talk to each other. I think we are suggesting people talk to each other and blog for those whom they cannot easily talk to.

For example, I just made a friend in Shanghai, China. I've never met him, don't know what he's like and have no idea where he grew up or went to college. But he reads my blog. And by an exchange of ideas, we're now trying to figure out how we could set up a cultural exchange for our students.

The blog enabled us to connect in ways we never would. The blog is just one element of the Web 2.0 concept which is to say that the purpose of the Internet is not to download, but to interact. So, I hope our participants in monday models will look at this tool as a new, powerful and relevant human interaction mode. Please use it appropriately and help kids master it so they can have their voices in the world.

PS: Mike, I wrote this with the StudentMate device. It is the first thing that has worked since it came out of the box [;-)
