Web Searching Strategies and Evaluations and Quickie Tech. Tips

At our last Monday Models, Randy, Dana and myself led the class through effective search strategies using Internet search engines. In addition to time-saving techniques, we took a close look at ways to evaluate a web page. Among the strategies covered were:

·         Analyzing the URL, and especially paying attention to the end extension, such as .com or .org.

·         Looking at the link command in Google advanced search to see who has linked to the Web page. We discussed the adage that you are the company you keep.

·         Looking at tactics to determine who “owns’ the Web site.

Also, using some simple Boolean operators, such at the “+” or “and” commands, how could we winnow down search results down to a manageable level? We had, in my opinion, some good conversation on how these tactics need to be employed by our students as they bring in electronic information.

In tonight’s class, we’ll look at a number of ways to improve our work flow. We’ll discuss organizational strategies such as making and labeling folders, and how to use drop and drag with multiple files to make virtual filing fast and efficient. Also, we’ll talk about file storage options, such as burning a file to a CD, or using a thumb drive to take work between multiple computers.

As always, we welcome your feedback and your own “tips and tricks.”

Have a great Holiday Break and thanks for blogging with us!
