 21st Century Panel at AHS

All future workers need to be less entitled, more creative, strong critical thinkers, better communicators (both oral and written), more self-directed and comfortable with change.

The development of such workers is related to a strong work ethic and perserverance over difficulty.  It is also to help young people get a sense of being part of something larger than themselves.  Group work and collaboration are essential skills.  New workers need to have a passion for what they do.

How much of this is embedded in our State Standards and in our measure of academic achievement, the CSAP?

Globalization: Students are in a global economy right now.  While some see the flattened world with gloom and doom, some see greater scope of opportunity.  The ability to bridge cultures really makes a difference in success.  It's more than tolerance for differences; it's about the ability to empathize, embrace and immerse.  Success is often based on the ability to understand the consumer, the customer, the client and how to meet the needs.

Competition is very much alive in the business world.  Most competition is best when teams are the focus.  But even individual competitiveness is important because the competition is deep.  The balance is making sure it advances self and organization.

[Dan's comment: this sounds like Cross Country, folks]

One panelist brought up clickers and asked if they were used in our schools.  I responded on behalf of the district that we have a wide array of instant response technologies in use in our schools.  His interest was the clear value he saw in total involvement of a class of students in a learning activity.

How would we redesign school for the 21st Century?  Internet access everywhere.  Laptop computers for all staff and students.  Time to collaborate and innovate.  Connect with higher education and business.

You can get people to move forward out of fear of punishment, but this only lasts a short time. The only way to get people movitiated for the long hall is with passion. I appreciate seeing educators recognize this. CSAP (and NCLB) have become punitive and punishment oriented, can we create a education system that is instead inspiring and uplifting? Carrot or stick, how should we educate our children?

Awesome comment! The mission to inspire rather than to drive!
