Our national guide in China uses the english name of Gavin. On our drive to the airport today, we shared with him our thoughts of his work as our guide. Those thoughts are captured here:
As we drove to the airport, we asked Gavin what he thought of our students. His said and I quote:
Gavin: In these students, I see something I've never seen in Chinese students: Independence.
What follows is what our group had to say about Gavin...

Re: Thanks Gavin
Gavin always watching over us. How Gavin helped the other guides understand what we wanted. Amazed how he could find 23 people in the crowd.

Re: Thanks Gavin
Always the last one to make sure we were safe. Waited outside bathrooms. I knew he was looking out for all of us.

Re: Thanks Gavin
It is hard to sum a people up in just a few words, but you did it. You summed our kids up with the word “independence.” That's right on. It is the duty of every father to take the best and give it to his son and try to limit the worst in himself. You do that so well... that is why I see you as a man of honor, a great father and a friend for life.

Re: Thanks Gavin
Lots of knowledge of the history of all the cities. When we were in Beijing with the insects. I dropped a 5 inside the vendor cart. The vendor just laughed at me, but Gavin go it out with chopsticks which was really cool of him.

Re: Thanks Gavin
Thanks. You made this trip special. As we go back, we'll lose some of the memories. But we will remember you and we will think of you when we think of China. We appreciated your patience and your hard work. And I loved the dancing in Xi'an.

Re: Thanks Gavin
On the first day, he would be our babysitter and body guard. I thought this was cheesey and yet it was exactly what he did. He was always there and I always felt safe. I appreciated helping my mom and Dad get some Mongolian food.

A beautiful thing about Gavin is his ability to sing. He's a good singer and he has the ability to do that without being nervous.

I love your patience. You never got angry and always showed us where the bathroom was. You were always the last one. You showed us how much you can love by loving us. I think your son is lucky to have you as a dad.

I value your kindness and your patience. You let us be flxible. My fondest memory was when you got us to sing on the bus when many of us were timid. You are awesome.

Without you, we would have been lost. I'm so glad you were with us. You translated for me. When we rode on the bikes, you waited for me to fix my bike and I felt safe. When you bring your son to America, he can chill with me.

When I saw your backpack worn on your chest, I thought it was weird. But I've learned why to do that and now I really like that.

Re: Thanks Gavin
My memories include when we got lost in Forbidden City meant a lot when you found us. And when you played with the kids in the orphanage, I saw the beautiful, human side of you. I will always remember you as the light of the end of the tunnel for us
