Highland Elementary School has developed a great relationship with world traveler Dean Jacobs.  Dean maintains a blog and regularly uses the publishing tool to share his exploits with students back home.  In the link below, you will note that he has posted a picture from Highland where our kids are interacting with people in Africa.  What a great use of technology!   This school is demonstrating an important truth: Technology can enhance and extend human relationships; it cannot replace them.   Congratulations to Highland for using technology to shatter the old barriers of time and distance!

Re: Highland elementary visits Africa

Amy Tharp has done an excellent job in nurturing this relationship with Dean and her students. Besides the blog Amy and her students also Skype with Dean in Ruwanda on a regular basis. This is an excellent example of technology breaking down the distance barriers for our students and letting them become involved in experiences far beyond their four walls.

Re: Highland elementary visits Africa

Thanks Dan for posting this. It is amazing. Today at lunch students were able to ask Dean questions about his experiences in Africa using Skype. He also went through a slide show and explained the pictures of the mountain gorillas he has been working with the past few months. It is such a great experience and Amy Tharp has done a wonderful job of giving students those world experiences and enhance their writing at the same time.

Re: Highland elementary visits Africa

Congratulations to Amy for opening the eyes of the children to a larger view of the world. Through this class, the children have been allowed to not only read an account of Dean Jacob's experiences and relationships in Africa, but also speak to Dean while seeing him via Skype. Dean's genuine appreciation of other cultures is truly felt when he speaks of his day to day interactions in Africa. His latest experiences with the mountain gorillas has given all of us first hand knowledge of this unique group. What a wonderful learning opportunity for Highland students, teachers and the parents.
