Five Arapahoe teachers have been selected to present their insights and proposals on technology in the classroom at the annual ISTE Conference to be held in Denver in June. Anne Smith and Kristen LeClaire will be presenting on Writing in the 21st Century. Jesse Craig, Brian Hatak and Jeff Smith will be sharing their work on “podcasting” in science. Brian’s work with podcasting has been nominated for the Edublogs Award for the Best Educational Use of Audio/Video.
The LPS Business Office has been awarded the Meritorious Budget Award for excellence in the preparation and issuance of a 2009-2010 school system annual budget from the Association of School Business Officials International. The award reflects the commitment of LPS and staff to meet the highest standards of school budgeting.
Karl Fisch, Arapahoe technology teacher, recently received the Edublogger Lifetime Achievement Award.
Theresa Echtermeyer, director of coaching for the Colorado United, has been facilitating PE classes for the Pathways and Redirection Day Center students.
Kari Baker and Dylan Leary, Arapahoe seniors, and Mitch Griebel, Heritage senior, have received appointments to attend the United States Air Force Academy. Mitch will play football and Dylan will play Lacrosse.
Tom Roberts, Arapahoe senior, has been selected as a candidate for the Presidential Scholars Program. The program recognizes and honors some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors.
The Broken Road Foundation provided 100 Goddard students, including several from the Apollo program, an opportunity to go shopping for new shoes at Dick Sports. The trip was coordinated by Karen Fowler-Smith.
Arapahoe Language Arts classes joined students from three other high schools to interact with well-known authors. The authors, Daniel Pink (Washington, D.C.) and Cory Doctorow (London, England) met and discussed their works with students via Skype. The students were able to question, connect, analyze and communicate with the author of two of their texts.
This year, Heritage has partnered with Arapahoe Community College to offer college credit to Heritage students through the College Ready program. In its first semester, 49 Heritage students earned college credit for completing a college-level business or western civilization class. Another 38 students earned college credit for College Latin; and another 45 students are now scheduled to take Latin II through the program. 17 of those students who earned Latin credit were freshman!
Goddard donated a number of books from the school’s library to the Pathways and Options library. The project was coordinated by Barb Donahue, Goddard’s Integrated Learning Specialist. Goddard has also made a generous donation to Pathways for the purchase of equipment and uniforms for the students.
Heritage staff and students received the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Service Award from the Littleton City Council and Mayor Clark. The award was presented at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast at ACC to honor Heritage’s work in Sierra Leone, Africa helping to build their sister school – the Heritage School of Kabala.
In related news, Heritage students participated in a live blog with their sister-school students in Kabala February 5th as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the bond between the two schools.
Six Arapahoe High students attended the 33rd Annual Math Day Competition hosted by Colorado State University. The students also take a PROBE exam (a written exam featuring challenging problems with potential scholarships for the ten highest scores). Tom Roberts, senior, received Honorable Mention for his performance on the PROBE exam. Other AHS participants were Melissa Chang, Lane Childers, Austin Long, Kyle Stachowiak and Alyse White.

A large number of LPS high school students have been selected for the Continental League Honor Choir, Honor Band and Honor Orchestra.
Mitch Griebel, Heritage senior, was named 4A All-State football player of the year and Mike Griebel, Heritage football coach, was named 4A All-State football coach of the year by the Denver Post. Mister Jones, Littleton senior, Shane Opitz, Heritage senior, and Griebel, were named to the All- Colorado football team by the Denver Post. Cortlin Couture, Heritage, Davis Gunter, Arapahoe and Noah Gaumer, Littleton, were named Honorable Mention by the Denver Post.
Griebel received the Old Spice Red Zone National Player of the Year Award for the second year in a row. The award goes to the nation’s top 50 athletes and is recognition for outstanding character, academic excellence and leadership.
Pete Barrett, Executive Director of the Littleton Soccer Association, has been inducted into the Colorado Youth Soccer Hall of Fame. Littleton Soccer Association is now located in the Whitman facility.
Mellissa Querry, Arapahoe, was named softball second team All-Centennial league and Molly Mullervy was named first team All-Centennial league.
Shay Niemeyer, Arapahoe, was named Honorable Mention All-State boys soccer.
Shane Opitz, Heritage senior, has been named to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s Louisville Slugger Pre Season All American Team. He will play baseball at the University of Nebraska.
