Littleton Public Schools Facility Use Task Force absorbs data;
discussions to take place in following weeks

(posted 3.18.08) The Littleton Public Schools Facility Use Task Force began meeting in February. So far, the meetings have been heavily focused on studying data from a number of areas; everything from student achievement to enrollment projections. Now, members of the Task Force will begin to discuss what the data tells them and what kinds of changes may need to be made, so long as changes result in an improved situation for the children served by the district.

The Facility Use Task Force includes broad membership representing parents, community members, teachers and principals from elementary, middle, and high schools levels, a classified staff member, and three liaisons from the district level.

Task Force members were charged with reviewing all data concerning district facility use and academic programs. This includes academic performance, demographic trends, school demand, facility condition and capital investments/needs, and financial considerations. Their goal is to develop principles, filters, and criteria to guide decisions when considering potential program and facility changes. Factors the Task Force will consider include academic achievement trends, long-range enrollment forecasts, impacts to students, parent choice and community preferences, demographic shifts, financial implications, and potential for future growth.

The Task Force is scheduled to present a preliminary report to the LPS Board of Education in April, with one of several public forums to be held before school is out in the spring.

 “The district has the responsibility to periodically review how its facilities are being used, not just to identify areas that might be under used, but to also see if there are better ways to house programs that benefit students,” said Kirk Madsen, LPS assistant superintendent of operations. “Any changes that might be made must improve the learning environment for the students we serve.”

Beef investigation concludes; beef to return to school menus

(posted 3.3.08)
Littleton Public Schools Food Services has completed its investigation into all beef products, and beef items will return to school food menus as early as today.

LPS Food Services did a complete investigation into all the district's beef products to ensure that all products recalled by the USDA had been identified and properly destroyed.  The recall came about three weeks ago as a result of the USDA's investigation into Westland Beef, which is a major supplier of beef products to public schools food services programs.

During the time of the investigation, all beef products had been pulled from LPS food services menus as a precaution.  Beef crumbles had returned to the menu last week, as the district's supplier had been cleared as not being one of the suppliers of the recalled beef crumbles.

LPS' investigation into all other beef products concluded late last week, and any recalled products have been properly destroyed.  Schools are now able to return beef to the menu.

Thanks to all LPS Food Services employees and school staff for their assistance in these efforts! And, thank you to LPS students, parents, and staff for their patience as LPS Food Services worked to ensure the highest quality products for those they serve.
