The real cost of Digital Immigrants
By Dan Maas on
3/14/2011
I am attending a CoSN Conference today. LPS is being honored with the Honorable Mention for Best IT Team at the conference this year.
During the International Symposium, I have spent time reflecting on a theme discussed here by Henry Jenkins,
Diana Rhoten
and Karen Greenwood Henke. One discussion point was the problem of claiming to be a digital immigrant. This was portrayed as a way adults give themselves an excuse for being illiterate. We must not resign ourselves to being illiterate, especially when all this "stuff" is designed to be so easy, a 5th grader can do it... or a Kinder... or the 3-year-old in the car-seat in the back.
But what seemed even more profound is how impactful this can be on kids. By adults choosing to remain illiterate in this new media, are we encouraging our kids to go off on their own, not expecting supervision? Social Media discussion
By Dan Maas on
3/11/2011
The Board of Education hosted a discussion item on Thursday, 3/10/11 about Social Media. We recruited participants via Twitter (my account is dmaas354) and used a number of Social Media tools for the discussion:
Google Sites: We hosted a page at a Google site within our Google Apps for Education domain www.lpsk12.org
Prezi: I wrote a presentation using the web-based presentation system and chose to do so not just to display this different medium, but because I think it was well suited for my task. Specifically, I like Prezi better than Power Point for discussions that entail a big idea made of constituent parts. In other situations, Power Point is my preferred tool when I need to present highly animated action on screen. You can see how my Prezi used a Venn Diagram on the topic here:
