LPS Foundation event raises $28,000 for the Inspired Writing project
The LPS Foundation Spirit Dinner Celebration was held last Saturday, April 17 and was a resounding success for both the LPS Foundation and the district-wide Inspired Writing program.  Close to 350 students, teachers, staff, parents, community leaders, and LPS supporters attended, and more than $28,000 was raised for the Inspired Writing program.  This funding will help expand the program into 10th grade across the district.  In addition, scholarships were presented to four graduating seniors and eight teachers were recognized as Ambassadors of 21st Century Learning.  Thank you to all who supported the LPS Foundation with this event.  To learn more, please visit www.lpsfoundation.com

Littleton Public Schools to host community budget forum May 10
As part of its ongoing effort to gain community feedback regarding budget challenges, LittletonPublic Schools will host a community budget forum. The meeting has been scheduled for:

Those in attendance will have an opportunity to:
• Hear an update regarding the current financial picture of the district and the impact of recent budget cuts,
• Learn about the concerns for school year 2011-2012, and
• Give feedback to the Board of Education.

Hats Off

Kyle Hanson, Heritage senior, has been offered the National Merit Lockheed Martin Academic Scholarship. 

Shane Opitz, Heritage senior, has been named to the second-team of the Rawlings/Perfect Game preseason West Region.

Nick Sullivan, Arapahoe senior, recently placed 17th at the 2010 World Irish Dancing Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.  At the same competition, he competed on the Senior Mixed Figure which placed 3rd and the Senior Mixed Ceili team which placed 5th.

The Heritage wrestling team placed 3rd in the Regional tournament and qualified seven wrestlers for state – Hunter Pinon, Michael Miller, Nick Ramos, Billy O’Brien, Billy Jackson, Logan Steppen, and Jeremy Todd.  Michael was 3rd in 5A state tournament and was named honorable mention for All-State by the Denver Post. Hunter and Michael will be wrestling in the Colorado High School coaches All-State games in June.  Logan Steppan received a $1,000 scholarship at a recent CHSCA luncheon.

Nancy Knight, Heritage teacher of Visually Impaired, and junior Carissa Ortega will be traveling to Kabala, Sierra Leone for 17 days in June and July to assist in building a dormitory for 40 blind children, many of whom have been abandoned by their families.  The girls and boys attending the blind school range in age from 5 to 22. 

Juliet Tolley, Littleton freshman, was elected District Secretary at the 58th annual Key Club Leadership Conference and Rocky Mountain District Convention.  The district includes Wyoming, western Nebraska and Colorado.

LPS Financial Services has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the U.S. and Canada.  The achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

LPS Communications Services recently received six Awards of Excellence and three Awards of Merit in the Colorado School Public Relations Association 2010 Communications Excellence Awards contest.

The LPS Inspired Writing Project is featured in the May 2010 issue of EDTECH Magazine.  This LPS program continues to gain national attention as a districtwide initiative that incorporates the use of Eee laptops in a proven effort to increase student achievement in language arts.

Ethan Anderson, Powell sixth grader, was one of the top qualifying contestants for the state level of the National Geographic Bee competition.

The Arapahoe Winter Guard won the state title at the recent competition.  The 22 member team captured the gold medal in the World Scholastic Division, the highest division, for Winter Guards.  The team is under the direction of coaches Kenny Bailey and Christian Donis.

Emily Seale, Options, has been selected to the metro level (final level) of the Metropolitan Mayors and Commissioners Youth Award Program.   Emily will join thirty-five students from nine counties at the recognition luncheon at the Seawell Grand Ballroom in the DCPA complex.

Arapahoe students placed second in the Gateway Calculus Bowl.  The InteGREAT team included Alyse White, Trevor Teply, Emily Lutz, Joyce Bassett and Jasmine Griffin.

Tom Roberts, Arapahoe senior, will be recognized at the Colorado Mathematics Awards reception and ceremony at the Grant-Humphreys Mansion for earning an Honorable Mention in the American Mathematics Competition.
