Names of District facilities shall be of a dignified and significant nature. Names of persons and places (or even ideas) used shall have stood the test of time as to their importance and worthiness of respect. Names of persons still living, or vague descriptive names shall not be used.
Names for new schools shall be drawn from the following categories:
Elementary: American Educators and Authors
Middle: Persons of Science
High: American History, Places, Presidents, Statesmen
The Board of Education will make the final decision in the naming of a school.
The Board of Education will consider requests from school and/or community groups to name a portion of a building, a single building on a campus with multiple buildings, or a specific area on the campus as a memorial for a person who is not living, provided the proposed name has special significance and/or the person has made an outstanding contribution to the school or the school system. The group making the request must agree to provide appropriate recognition, such as a plaque or marker, for the school. Upon recommendation from administration, the Board of Education will make the final decision about naming memorials and will approve the plaque or marker.
