Policy Code    IHCDA-R

Policy Name    Postsecondary Options/Concurrent Enrollment

Adoption            March 2, 1993

Revised              April 30, 1997

A student intending to enroll in a postsecondary program must give written notice to the counselor by May 15 for fall semester and by November 15 for spring semester. The notice must include a description of all course work in which the student intends to enroll and for which he/she requests high school graduation credit. The notice also must include a statement explaining the reason why the student wishes to take course work at a postsecondary institution, i.e., he/she needs course work at a higher academic level than is available at the high school or is in need of a different learning environment. The counselor will determine whether the student is eligible for the program based on the above criteria. The counselor may request a meeting with the student and parent/guardian to discuss eligibility. It is the responsibility of the student to apply for enrollment at the postsecondary institution.

The following process will be followed for all requests to participate in the postsecondary options program:

1.       After eligibility is established, the counselor will determine if the requested course(s) is appropriate for high school graduation.

2.       The principal or designee will approve the course(s) for high school graduation credit.

3.       The application will be forwarded by the school to the Postsecondary Options Act administrator at the Education Services Center (ESC) for final approval by May 20 for fall semester and by November 20 for spring semester.

4.       Students will be notified in writing by the ESC administrator upon approval of the application. The notification will be mailed by June 1 for fall semester and by December 1 for spring semester.

Students will receive credit for approved courses unless denied by the principal and the denial is upheld by the Superintendent and the Board of Education on the basis that high school credit is inappropriate.
