Policy Code    IKA

Policy Name    Grading/Assessment System

Adoption            January 5, 1993

Revised              January 29, 2009

It is the philosophy of the Board of Education that students respond more positively to the opportunity for success than to the threat of failure. Student achievement shall be the focus of District instructional programs and student evaluation systems.

The administration and professional staff shall devise systems for evaluating and recording student progress and to measure student performance in conjunction with District content standards. The records and reports of individual students should be kept in a form meaningful to parents and students as well as teachers.

The Board of Education recognizes that any system of measuring student progress is somewhat subjective in nature, but urges all faculty members to conduct student evaluations as objectively as possible. Grading shall not be influenced by pressure from parents, guardians, and/or school community members.

Each school site shall develop a rationale and process for use in creating student assessments and the reporting of student progress to its publics.
