Policy

Policy Code    IMA

Policy Name    Teaching Activities/Presentations

Adoption            January 19, 1993

Revised              September 8, 2005

It is the desire of the Board of Education that the best available strategies for bringing about learning be utilized in the District’s schools. The instructional staff shall be expected to keep abreast of new and promising instructional ideas and practices developed in schools throughout the nation and to apply those which have potential for improving the learning program in the District’s schools.

An educational climate shall be established which shall be conducive to rational thought, inquiry, and respect for the dignity of the individual. This educational climate will assist students in learning how to think rather than what to think and shall provide students the opportunity to identify, express, and defend their opinions without penalty or fear of reprisal or ridicule.

The Board of Education recognizes that on occasion a teaching activity or strategy may be utilized which some parents may find objectionable. Schools will make their best efforts to identify and notify parents of the teaching materials or methods of instruction in upcoming curriculum that may reasonably be foreseen to offend the moral, ethical, religious, or political conscience of individuals, allowing adequate time for parents to review materials and opt out if desired. Parents are encouraged to discuss their concerns with the classroom teacher at the beginning of the school year or any other appropriate time. When parents have a reasonable objection, a request to opt-out of the planned teaching activity, presentation, or assigned material may be made.

Learning alternatives may be provided when a student’s parent/guardian determines that the student should not be exposed to the assigned activities, presentations, or materials. All alternatives to the selected unit of study, must be relevant to the District curriculum learner objectives.

Nothing in this policy shall limit a parent/guardian’s right to file a complaint to challenge the use of a teaching activity, presentation, or material.
