Policy Name    School Bus Safety Program

Adoption            July 2, 1984

Revised              November 17, 1992

The safety and welfare of student bus riders will be the first consideration in all matters pertaining to transportation. Safety precautions will include the following:

Students will be instructed as to the proper procedure for boarding and exiting from a school bus and in proper and safe conduct while aboard.

Emergency evacuation drills will be conducted at least two times a year to acquaint student riders with procedures in emergency situations.

Passengers of any school bus used on mountainous terrain, as defined by state law, shall not occupy the front row of seats and any seats located next to emergency doors unless the bus is equipped with retarders which supplement the bus brake system.

All vehicles used to transport students will be inspected regularly to see that they meet safety regulations.

A bus driver who observes a vehicle passing the school bus when the flashing red signal lights are activated shall notify the transportation supervisor of the violation and provide him with the basic information required by law. The transportation supervisor shall convey this information to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

The District will comply with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of school buses and shall make these requirements known to bus drivers. It shall also cooperate with local safety officials in formulating and accomplishing its school bus safety program.

The director of transportation is responsible for a safe environment for passengers and drivers by providing a continuum of training programs for school bus drivers, school bus paraprofessionals, students, and staff.
