Policy Code    EEACC

Policy Name    Student Conduct on School Buses

Adoption            July 2, 1984

Revised              August 5, 1986

To ensure the safe transportation of students, the school bus driver will have the responsibility of maintaining orderly behavior of students on school buses. During instructional field trips or extracurricular activity trips, this responsibility is shared by the school bus driver and sponsor.

Rules for safe school bus riding will be posted in the front of the bus in a location visible to all passengers. These rules will be reviewed annually by the director of transportation and updated as necessary. During the school year, the school bus driver will periodically review these rules with the students and explain consequences for misbehavior on the school bus.

Minor incidents of student misbehavior are to be dealt with by the school bus driver. Disruptive behavior and major incidents of misbehavior jeopardizing the safety of other students are to be reported immediately by the school bus driver to the principal on the School Bus Incident Report form. Since the school bus is an extension of the school situation, Board policies JFC through JGE may be invoked by the principal.

It is discretionary as to whether a board of education may provide bus transportation for its students. It is, therefore, a privilege for students to ride a school bus. The school principal has the authority to suspend bus riding privileges of students who are disciplinary problems on the bus. Parents of students whose bus riding privilege is being suspended by the school principal will be notified by the principal prior to the date of suspension.
