Policy

Policy Code    EEAD

Policy Name    Special Use of School Buses

Adoption            July 2, 1984

Revised              October 9, 1997

Titles updated May 22, 2000.

School buses may be used for instructional field trips and extracurricular activity trips insofar as such trips do not interfere with the regular transporting of students to and from school. The director of transportation shall have the authority to determine whether or not road conditions are safe for the proposed trip. The use of District transportation services by school groups for instructional field trips and extracurricular activity trips will be financially self-supporting.

An adult, designated by the principal, sponsoring an instructional field trip or extracurricular activity trip shall, in cooperation with the school bus driver, have responsibility for the behavior of the passengers. If more than one bus is necessary for the trip, it will be the sponsor’s responsibility to provide a minimum of one adult supervisor for each bus.

It shall be the policy of the Board of Education to offer students the opportunity to participate in extended and long-range trips. Long-range trips are limited to destinations within the state of Colorado. An extended trip is hereby defined as any trip that requires the participants to be away from home overnight. Sponsors for such trips shall follow the District’s established guidelines and procedures, including a complete plan for funding, supervision, and arrangements. In all instances, long-range and extended field trips must first have the approval of the building principal or administrator, and final approval by the director of elementary education or the director of secondary education prior to submitting the request to transportation services.

This policy was also revised and accepted by the Board on August 5, 1986.
