Policy Code EGAEA Policy Name Electronic Mail and Internet Services Adoption August 28, 1997 Revised June 18, 2009 |
Purpose
To define the proper use of electronic mail (e-mail) and Internet services. The District provides resources for e-mail and Internet services for the purpose of advancing the educational mission of the District. These resources are provided and maintained at the District’s—and, therefore, the public’s—expense and are to be used by members of the school community with respect for the public trust through which they have been provided.
Definition
Electronic mail includes all electronic messages that are transmitted through the District’s e-mail system via a local, regional, or global network. Internet services include access to all Web sites and network-based services via a local, regional, or global network. An “approved service provider” is a non-District employee providing services to the District under contract or similar arrangement who has been approved to use District e-mail and Internet services by the supervising Assistant Superintendent.
Policy
The District is committed to providing an environment that encourages the use of computers and electronic information as essential tools to support education. It is the responsibility of each employee, approved service provider, and those they supervise to ensure that this technology is used for proper purposes and in a manner that does not compromise the confidentiality of proprietary or other sensitive information.
The Board of Education directs the Superintendent to develop regulations and procedures for use of electronic mail and the Internet. Such regulations and procedures should address, among other matters, issues of privacy, access of information, ethical use of information, illegal and/or unauthorized uses of e-mail and the Internet.
Notice of Policy
The Superintendent will ensure that all District employees and approved service providers have notice of this policy and that each District employee and approved service provider signs an acknowledgement form stating they have received and read the policy. The form will be maintained in the employee’s personnel file or with the service provider’s contract.
