Policy Code GBG Policy Name Staff Participation in Political Activities Adoption July 2, 1984 Revised June 29, 2006 |
The Board recognizes the right of its employees, as citizens, to engage in political activity. However, the Board also recognizes that property and school time, paid for by all the people of the District, should not be used for partisan political purposes except as provided for in policies pertaining to the use of District buildings and equipment.
Political and campaign literature may be distributed within the buildings, schools, or other facilities of the District only in such manner as will preserve the normal and orderly function of the school building, or facility, and not interfere with nor disrupt the educational process.
Campaign literature dealing with political issues shall not be distributed within the buildings, schools, or other District facilities in any manner which may tend to indicate that the District endorses or has taken any position with respect to any such issue unless the Board has so endorsed or taken a position as to such issue.
Distribution of campaign literature shall receive prior approval of the person in charge of each building, school, or other District facility.
Nothing in this policy will be interpreted as prohibiting teachers from conducting appropriate activities which encourage students to become involved in the political processes of the party of the students’ choice or as independents, nor does it prohibit the use of political figures as resource persons in the classrooms.
District employees have the right to display the flag of the United States on their person, personal property, and/or property under their temporary control (except District vehicles), such as a desk or locker, provided such display is reasonable and does not disrupt the educational process or cause a safety concern.
