Policy Code    JJI

Policy Name    Interscholastic and Intramural

                                 Athletics

Adoption            July 2, 1984

Revised              March 1, 1988

This policy was called IGDJ.

The Board recognizes the value of athletics in relationship to the total school program. The athletic program should emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship, and recognize that the purpose of athletics is to promote the physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being of the individual participants. The Board strongly encourages the development of proper health habits, including the nonuse of chemicals, alcohol, and tobacco.

Middle School

The Board believes that one purpose of athletics is to provide the benefits of competitive experiences to as large a number of students within the District as possible. The Board values the opportunity for students to participate in individual and team experiences.

High School

Interscholastic athletics at each high school are an integral part of the cocurricular activities organized and administered so that they contribute to the overall educational experiences of participants and spectators. These programs shall be structured in such a manner to create equal opportunity for the participation of both girls and boys. The program of physical activities should concern itself with the worthy use of leisure time, citizenship, and character building.

The purposes of athletic programs at the high school level are:

To provide a wide basis of participation in both team and individual sports in interscholastic competition.

To develop a strong program of competitive sports:

By encouraging and developing talented athletes in District-approved sports and providing sufficient opportunity for students to develop individual ability.

By encouraging the development of team spirit among all members of the team and their coaches.

By developing good attitudes of pride, sportsmanship, and ethical behavior in participants and spectators.

By developing and maintaining a good relationship between athletic teams and the student body, faculty, administration, and community.

By teaching fundamentals and techniques of each sport in a progressive sequence as appropriate for students at higher grade levels.

By providing student athletes with an awareness of potential opportunities as afforded them through competitive athletics.

It is essential that every participant understand that he/she will be expected to abide by the rules and regulations as established by the Colorado High School Activities Association, Littleton Public Schools, and the individual school. These rules and regulations shall be thoroughly discussed between coaches and athletes following distribution of the written document explaining the rules and regulations.

Customarily the principals of member schools, or their designees, are voting members of athletic organizations. It should be understood that such administrators serve as representatives of the District. Therefore, before voting on a change of bylaws, rules, or regulations that will in any way affect the schools or athletic teams of this District, this District’s representatives to athletic organizations will advise the appropriate instructional administrator of the proposed change and seek and follow appropriate directions.
