Guidelines for Student Participation in Outside Athletic Competition
The following guidelines govern students participating in outside athletic competition while also participating in high school interscholastic athletic programs (“sports”).
“Outside athletic competition” is defined as those activities provided by an amateur association or league that is not a member of the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) or any other association of schools that organizes and controls sanctioned extracurricular or interscholastic activities.
In granting permission to students to participate in outside athletic competition, high school principals shall use the following guidelines.
1. Prior to participating in any outside athletic competition, the student shall obtain the express written permission of the principal of the school at which the student participates in the sport.
2. During the season in which the student is competing for a high school team and also involved in outside athletic competition, LPS encourages, but does not require, the student to comply with applicable CHSAA practice rules with respect to the outside athletic competition. Those rules include, but are not limited to:
a. Nine days of practice before outside athletic competition.
b. A physical examination and parent permission prior to outside athletic competition or practice.
3. In the event of scheduling conflicts, the student’s school sports practices and contests will take priority over any outside athletic competition practices or contests.
4. The failure of the student to accord priority to his/her school sports practices and contests over any outside athletic competition practices or contests without the express consent of the school principal or designee may result in the student’s suspension or dismissal from his/her school sport.
5. Because outside athletic competition is designed for individuals who wish to compete on outside teams, district schools shall not permit groups or an entire high school team to compete as a team in an outside league or event. Furthermore, in no event may a school or its coaching staff use the student’s right to participate in outside competition to circumvent otherwise applicable CHSAA rules.
6. The student must submit requests to participate in international athletic competition to the CHSAA Commissioner.
