Policy Code JLCD Policy Name Administering Medications to Students Adoption July 2, 1984 Revised June 24, 2010 |
Whenever possible, medications should be taken by students at home. However, when this is not possible, and students must take prescription or nonprescription medications during the school day, such medications will only be administered by a registered nurse (RN) or school personnel delegated by the RN or self-administered by students in accordance with this policy and accompanying regulation.
“Parent” as used in this policy and accompanying regulation means a parent, noncustodial parent, guardian, or individual acting as a parent of the student in the absence of a parent or guardian.
“Health care provider” as used in this policy and accompanying regulation means a health care provider with prescriptive authority. According to the Colorado Nurse Practice Act 12-38-101 C.R.S, persons with prescriptive authority include: physicians, including doctor of osteopathy; podiatrists; dentists; nurse practitioners; and physician’s assistants under the direction of a physician or written protocol.
Elementary and middle level students shall not be permitted to carry or self-administer prescription or nonprescription medication while at school except as authorized in writing by the student’s health care provider, and based on the assessment of the RN, the student is self-directed and demonstrates the skill level necessary to use the medication. Schools may administer medication to students if:
a written request to provide the medication has been submitted by the student’s parent;
and
the school has been provided with a health care provider’s written authorization.
High school students may carry and self-administer their own prescription or nonprescription medication. Schools may administer medication to high school students when expressly required by a health care provider’s written statement, and concurrently requested in writing by the student’s parent.
Students with asthma, a food allergy, other severe allergies, or a related life-threatening condition may possess and self-administer medication in accordance with the Colorado Schoolchildren’s Asthma, Food Allergy, and Anaphylaxis Health Management Act, applicable State Board of Education rules, this policy’s accompanying regulation, and school or District rules.
