Policy Code KL Policy Name Public Concerns/Complaints Adoption July 2, 1984 Revised August 13, 1998 |
The Board recognizes the right of individuals and groups to present concerns/complaints about school personnel, curriculum, instructional materials, school services, or school facilities.
In the interest of handling all concerns/complaints fairly and expeditiously, the Board has established the following guidelines:
Whenever a concern/complaint is made directly to the Board as a whole or to an individual Board member, the individual or group involved will be advised to take their concern/complaint to the appropriate school staff member. This could be a teacher, a supervisor, a principal, a central office administrator, or the Superintendent.
The individual or group will be advised of the proper channel for concerns/complaints, which is as follows:
Supervisor or teacher
Building administrator
Central office administrator(s)
Superintendent
Board of Education
If a Board member receives a significant concern/complaint that should be addressed, and has reason to believe that the person or persons involved will not take it to the appropriate staff member, the Board member should inform the Superintendent of the situation.
An individual or group seeking a review of a decision made by a staff member must follow Board policy concerning review of decisions.
An individual or group may request to place an item on a Board of Education meeting agenda by notifying the Superintendent in writing stating the item to be discussed. The Superintendent will communicate with the Board president, and the Board will consider placing requests on a future Board agenda.
The Board of Education has the right and responsibility to decide if requests will be heard and whether an item will be discussed in public or executive session. Concerns/complaints about personnel, if considered, will be handled in executive session. Such decisions will be made and communicated in a timely fashion.
