EPIC students get a tour of the College of Agricultural Sciences' green roof.

EPIC students recently visited Colorado State University for an immersive look into environmental horticulture careers, gaining firsthand experience in college-level learning, design labs, and industry-connected pathways.

During their visit, students interacted with CSU undergraduates and faculty in the Landscape Design and Contracting Program, explored in-progress projects, and asked thoughtful questions about coursework, campus life, and career opportunities.

A student reviews a large architectural landscape blueprint titled "Mid Century Residence" on a desk with classmates.

“As the room filled with conversation, the picture of what life looked like as a student on CSU’s campus became clearer… it was a community to explore,” the article notes.

The visit is part of a growing partnership between EPIC Campus and CSU that provides students with meaningful exposure to postsecondary options, early college credit, and real-world applications of classroom learning. Through this collaboration, EPIC students can enroll in HORT 100, earning college credit while still in high school, and participate in ongoing campus visits, guest lectures, and industry events.

Trevor Renfro, an environmental horticulture student at CSU, talks about their designs with visiting high schoolers.

EPIC Natural Resources Pathway Lead Mike Montgomery shared that these experiences help students see college as attainable and relevant to their interests. “They feel like they belong because they see kids just like them,” he said.

This partnership continues to open doors for students by building confidence, expanding career awareness, and connecting learning to future opportunities in agriculture, sustainability, and environmental sciences.

Chris Tragakes, program coordinator for CSU’s landscape design and contracting program, welcomes high schoolers from Littleton Public Schools' EPIC program to campus.
