Dear LPS Families, Employees, and Community Members,

We want to provide you with another update regarding the deeply troubling situation nearly two years ago involving a former paraprofessional on a bus responsible for transporting students with special needs.

When one of our families told us in March 2024 that they noticed injuries to their child after being transported home, we immediately investigated the situation, which quickly resulted in the paraprofessional’s termination and a report to law enforcement.

Since that day, LPS has cooperated fully with law enforcement and the district attorney’s office that prosecuted the criminal case. We also have looked within our district to understand how something like this could happen and have considered what additional steps may promote student safety on our buses.

We established a Special Transportation Task Force made up of parents, district staff, and experts in response to this incident. That task force made numerous recommendations for changes in transportation policies, procedures and oversight, which we have accepted and implemented. The task force continues to meet, and we look forward to its future contributions.

We are writing today to share a significant development. This evening at its regularly scheduled meeting, the Littleton Public Schools Board of Education approved a $3.85 million settlement with three of the families whose children rode the bus. This settlement resulted from discussions through legal counsel extending over many months and will be fully funded through insurance. There will be no adverse impact on the educational services LPS students receive.

Parents put a tremendous amount of trust in us every day. Please know student safety remains our highest priority. LPS aspires to be a state leader in safeguarding the children we serve. We will continue to look for ways to strengthen our practices, to communicate transparently with you, and to do everything in our power to ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of every student in our care.

Respectfully,

Todd Lambert
Superintendent
