Reaching Our Broader Community

LPS recently mailed a letter to community members who are not directly connected to our schools, including senior citizens, to ensure everyone has direct access to accurate information about the district’s financial outlook and potential impacts on our community.


Dear LPS Community,

As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, I want to extend a warm greeting to all of our neighbors. Whether or not you currently have children in our schools, you are a vital partner in our community. Strong public schools protect home values, strengthen our local workforce, and build a vibrant place to live.

LPS continues to be recognized as one of the premier school districts in Colorado. Thanks to the dedication of our outstanding staff and the generous support of our residents, our district consistently ranks at the top of local and statewide performance metrics across academic excellence, teaching quality, and student outcomes. From state-recognized STEM and Career & Technical Education (CTE) opportunities to championship athletics and award-winning arts, our focus remains on helping every student thrive in environments where they feel safe, supported, challenged, and connected.

However, state budget constraints, declining enrollment, and rising costs present ongoing challenges. To address a $10.6 million budget gap this year, LPS implemented immediate cost-reduction measures—including central office staffing cuts, operational reductions, a wage freeze, and a scheduled furlough day on March 19, 2027. We made these decisions to protect the classroom experience. However, because 85% of our budget directly supports the teachers and staff serving our students, internal cuts alone cannot bridge long-term state funding shortfalls without eventually impacting instruction.

To ensure ongoing financial stability and maintain our standard of excellence, the Board of Education is currently evaluating whether to place a Mill Levy Override (MLO) measure on the November 2026 ballot.

If approved by the Board and local voters, this ongoing local funding would focus on three key priorities across our schools:

  • Attracting and retaining outstanding teachers to continue exceptional learning and care for every student;

  • Sustaining academic excellence and expanding career readiness through innovative programming; and

  • Maintaining safe, secure schools where all students can thrive.

How You Can Stay Engaged:

  • Board decision vote: The Board of Education will hold its meeting on Thursday, August 13, to make a final determination on placing a measure on the November ballot.
