One of the highlights of each Board of Education meeting is recognizing students who exemplify the Portrait of an LPS Graduate, LPS's vision for the knowledge, skills, and character we want every student to develop before graduation.
While Rigorous and Relevant Academic Skills provide the foundation, we know success in college, careers, and life depends on the ability to adapt, collaborate, communicate, and think critically in an ever-changing world. That’s why the Portrait emphasizes developing students who are Well-Adjusted, Thriving, and Balanced, while growing in:

These aren’t skills students develop in a single classroom or a single year. They are cultivated through meaningful learning experiences, relationships, and opportunities from preschool through graduation, and we are proud to recognize students of all ages who demonstrate these qualities and remind us what it means to be an LPS graduate.
At the September 10 meeting, the Board of Education recognized students from Lenski and Gaskill elementary schools.
Lenski Elementary School
AJ B.’s teacher, Ms. Capps, shared that AJ is an excellent student who communicates effectively during class discussions. He demonstrates remarkable flexibility and adaptability within the classroom. He adjusts easily when the learning environment changes, the schedule needs to be modified, or he is working with different partners and perspectives. AJ is also an impressive problem-solver who approaches challenges thoughtfully and works to find solutions. AJ’s ability to support his own learning while also encouraging and supporting those around him is a wonderful strength. He contributes positively to the classroom community and demonstrates maturity, flexibility, and a strong commitment to learning.
Christopher B.’s teacher, Ms. Shelledy, shared that he is a shining star of a student! Through his actions, relationships, and commitment to others, he exemplifies a well-rounded and thoughtful member of Lois Lenski Elementary. Christopher demonstrates character through his kindness and genuine care for those around him. He is someone others can depend on and consistently approaches his work and interactions with respect and a “can-do” attitude. His strong communication and collaboration skills allow him to build meaningful relationships, listen to the perspectives of others, and contribute effectively as a member of a team. Christopher also demonstrates resiliency and problem-solving. When faced with challenges, he remains flexible and continues moving forward rather than becoming discouraged. Christopher truly exemplifies what a Portrait of a Graduate represents!
Vera W.’s teacher, Ms. Warner, shared that Vera takes an active and meaningful role in both her learning and her classroom community. She is curious, conscientious, and consistently challenges herself to reach her full potential. Vera does not simply stop at what is expected of her; she looks for opportunities to go above and beyond in her work and learning. Vera is also a strong self-advocate who is eager to understand what she can do next, whether that means extending her rigorous and relevant academic skills or finding ways to support her classmates. She approaches each day with a positive attitude and a genuine desire to learn, grow, and contribute to those around her.
Charley S.'s teacher, Ms. O’Rourke, shared that Charley has been incredibly resilient with taking on the new challenges, pressures, and grit-building activities that take place in fifth grade. She lifts others and maintains an positive attitude and growth mindset, demonstrating exceptional character. She does not seek the easy way out; instead, she takes on new responsibilities and challenges with a belief that she truly can do hard things. This permeates the culture of the entire class. It's been wonderful to see Charley take fifth grade by the horns! Go, kiddo, go!
Gaskill Elementary School
Shelby H. is a student who demonstrates positivity, grit, and resilience. She comes to school every day ready to learn and take on hard things. Her energy radiates throughout her classroom, which makes everyone around her take a positive approach to learning. Shelby is a compassionate and supportive classmate who notices when others are feeling down and goes out of her way to care for them. We are so proud to have Shelby as part of our Gaskill community.
Jonathan O. is a leader in class and a compassionate advocate who speaks up when he sees someone being treated unfairly, consistently demonstrating outstanding character. He models rigorous and relevant academic skills in his classroom, which sets the example for the entire fifth grade cohort. Through his natural communication skills, Jonathan inspires those around him to be their best every day. Jonathan is a true Trailblazer!
