Graphic titled "E-Bikes on Campus" showing three e-bikes categorized by Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 underneath.

Over the past several months, schools across LPS have seen a significant increase in the number of students riding electric bikes and scooters to school. While many students use these devices responsibly, we have also experienced growing safety concerns, including unsafe riding behaviors, misuse of motorized transportation devices on sidewalks and pathways, and damage to district property, including turf fields and landscaped areas. In some cases, repairs have cost thousands of dollars. E-bikes and scooters also have a significant risk of injury. For more information, please reference E-Bike Safety: What Parents Need to Know to Protect Their Kids.

To help families better understand what is and is not permitted, we are sharing guidance developed in partnership with local law enforcement and based on Colorado law.

Transportation Devices Allowed at School

Students may ride:

  • Class 1 e-bikes (pedal-assist only; maximum assisted speed of 20 mph)

  • Class 2 e-bikes (throttle and pedal-assist; maximum speed of 20 mph; under 750 watts)

  • Electric scooters under 750 watts that do not exceed 20 mph

Transportation Devices NOT Allowed at School

The following are not permitted on school property for transportation to and from school:

  • Class 3 e-bikes for students under age 16

  • Electric motorcycles

  • Low-power electric vehicles

  • Mopeds

  • Motorized toys or devices not legal for road or path use

  • Pocket bikes or mini motorcycles

State Legal Requirements

Colorado law requires some higher-powered electric vehicles to be licensed, registered, and insured. Riders of Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes under the age of 18 are also required to wear helmets.

In Colorado, electric bikes are required to have a manufacturer label indicating the bike’s classification (Class 1, 2 or 3), top assisted speed, and motor wattage. These labels are generally located on the frame near the seat tube or bottom bracket and help determine whether a device is permitted on sidewalks, bike paths, and school property. Families are encouraged to review these specifications before students ride transportation devices to school.

In addition to legal requirements, students are expected to:

  • Ride responsibly and follow traffic laws

  • Yield to pedestrians

  • Stay off turf fields, tracks, playgrounds, and landscaped areas

  • Ride only in approved areas

  • Park devices in designated locations

  • Wear helmets and prioritize safety

Schools may also implement transportation device registration or approval procedures for students riding e-bikes or scooters to campus. Families will receive communication directly from their school if additional procedures or identification requirements are put into place. Schools may also apply consequences for unsafe riding, property damage, or bringing prohibited devices onto campus.

We appreciate your partnership in helping keep our students, staff, and community safe. Thank you for your support and cooperation!
