Staff spent time examining EPIC’s vision, purpose and value statements with the question in mind, “Are we doing what we said we would do?”

EPIC Staff focused this week's professional learning around Jon Gordon's article "Building Greatness". Gordon discusses the challenge of becoming a craftsman or craftswoman - the work is more than just showing up; it requires consistency. Gordon also goes on to say, "When you are a craftsman in a world of carpenters, people will clamor for your product or service and your craftsmanship. And here's the great news. We can all be a craftsman or craftswoman. It doesn't happen right away. There's no such thing as an overnight success. You will have to try new things, fail, learn, improve and grow. You'll face countless challenges and tons of rejection that make you doubt yourself and cause you to want to quit. But if you see yourself as an artist dedicated to your craft with a desire to get better and you show up each day and put your heart and soul into your work you'll get there and the world will be better for it." At EPIC, we are working hard at growing our craft. We are chipping away at greatness individually by growing as instructors. Each instructor committed to one area of improvement that would lead to improving a student experience.

Teacher Cadets are already working with our industry partners! LPS’ Nick Schuster came in to work with our Cadets on diversity and self esteem in children’s literature. Schuster helped our students navigate through the important work of classroom libraries so that all children can be seen, heard and valued. Additionally, Schuster challenged the students with their role in protecting access to ALL books for kids. Books should provide windows, mirrors or sliding doors for children to see others, reflect their own world, or be a portal into another world.
